Piloting of “My Mentor” program begins in schools of Kyrgyzstan

Piloting of «My Mentor» professional development program began in 60 schools in Bishkek and Chui region. The Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan reported.

The program will be piloted using the Observation of Educational Practices tool — a comprehensive assessment of the learning process during a lesson, which is based on a review of the learning environment and the activities of both the teacher and students during the lesson.

«This observation is carried out in real time/video lesson mode to support teachers on an ongoing basis. To objectively assess a lesson, teachers use video recordings/video fragments of lessons that he or she provides to the mentor,» the ministry reported.

The Ministry of Education explained that the labor functions determined by the professional standard served as the basis for determining the main areas for assessment:

  • Educational environment;
  • Classroom organization;
  • Education;
  • Grading.

«The main indicators and criteria in each area are determined taking into account the expectations and requirements for the learning process, focused on the formation of competencies/educational results presented in the state educational and subject standards of school general education,» the ministry added.

At least 120 teachers were selected for piloting — one primary school teacher and one STEM teacher from each school.

«Each school was provided with a video camera, and teachers took a short course on filming a lesson. Mentors are provided with tablets with video editing software. The mentors completed a two-day training on using video fragments provided by teachers to assess and rank the main stages of the lesson according to the Observation of Educational Practices criteria,» the ministry concluded.

The tool for Observation of Educational Practices was developed within the framework of «Education for the Future» project, implemented by the Ministry of Education and Science.
