Decrease in level of trust is one of reasons for low voter turnout at elections

Deputy Gulya Kozhokulova asked at a meeting of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial, Legal Issues and Regulations of the Parliaments about reasons for low voter turnout in Bishkek.

The head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Nurzhan Shaildabekova answered that there are several reasons for this.

«After the 2020 crisis, there was a decline in the level of trust in elections. Secondly, it is apathy towards electoral processes. Because the 2020 elections were very active — almost 2 million people participated in them, this is 300,000 more voters than in previous campaigns. Another reason is the high level of internal migration. There are many citizens living in Bishkek whose address in their passports does not correspond to their actual place of residence,» Nurzhan Shaildabekova said.

It should be noted that a low voter turnout was registered at the repeat election in Leninsky single-mandate constituency No. 26. It reached 15.85 percent — 20,169 people came to the polling stations. The total number of registered voters is 127,239.
