Mining farm in Kemin: Energy Ministry of Kazakhstan denies energy supplies

The Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliev commented on the statement by the head of the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Ibraev that a cryptocurrency mining company in Chui region will start buying electricity from Kazakhstan from August. Azattyk reported with reference to its Kazakhstan’s branch.

According to it, the Kazakhstan’s energy sector has the ability to export excess electricity. But there are no specific agreements with the Kyrgyz mining company yet.

«Due to the fact that a reform of the electricity market is ongoing in Kazakhstan, the so-called «Single Purchaser of Electricity» has been created. It is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Energy, which purchases electricity in bulk, including export and import one. Based on the work of the Single Purchaser, we see that during the night hours and certain daytime hours, the Kazakhstan’s energy system has the opportunity to export electricity. We are ready to offer it to international markets, including for export to the Central Asian republics. I think, let them decide for themselves who will acquire it. We will proceed from the interests of Kazakhstan,» Almasadam Satkaliev said.

«I need some time to clarify the information. We have only determined the amount of electricity that we can supply. There are no specific agreements. But in general, there is a possibility. I admit that negotiations are taking place at the level of energy enterprises,» Almasadam Satkaliev answered the question whether a Kyrgyz mining company has been receiving Kazakhstani electricity since August 1.

Radio Azattyk journalists found a mining farm in Kemin. The author of the investigation managed to find connections between the facility and members of the board of directors of state-owned energy companies. The President of the country also commented on the situation. He said that the construction of the mining farm in Kemin district was allowed because the power of the substation allows it. After the uproar, the company allegedly refused to use Kyrgyz electricity.
