Mining farm in Kemin refuses Kyrgyz electricity

The Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan announced termination of the sale of electricity to a cryptocurrency mining farm in Kemin from August 1. He told about it an interview with Azattyk.

The minister noted that last year the Parliament adopted a law allowing cryptocurrency mining. There is a power reserve at Bystrovka substation, so the power industry specialists gave permission for mining.

«They started with 5 megawatts, today they use and pay for 25 megawatts. The mining company built a substation, laid lines from our substation. They have been working since November and have paid 480 million soms. There is no theft here. But after this investigation, the company refused to cooperate from August 1. We are losing money. The company will buy electricity from the Kazakh company, and will only pay 23 tyiyns for transit. Instead of 480 million, we will get 17 million soms,» Taalaibek Ibraev said.

He also denied the information that mining farms operate in other regions of the country. He only confirmed that negotiations are underway with the Russian company MBT Stroy on the allocation of 30 megawatts of power from Kambarata HPP-2.

On July 27, Azattyk released an investigation into the activities of a mining farm in Kemin amid the energy crisis in Kyrgyzstan. The author of the investigation managed to find connections between the mining farm and members of the Board of Directors of state-owned energy companies.

«We allowed the construction of such a farm in Kemin district because the capacity of Kemin substation allows it,» President Sadyr Japarov explained the work of the facility.
