Internal Affairs Ministry of Kyrgyzstan plans to open DNA laboratory

The Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to open a DNA laboratory. $2 million is needed. Deputy Interior Minister Erkebek Ashirkhodzhaev announced at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on social policy.

MP Zhyldyz Sadyrbaeva noted that rape is a serious crime. Accusation of it requires a solid evidence base. The main mechanism is DNA analysis.

«We do not have a laboratory in the republic. How do you make it?» she asked.

The police official noted that DNA tests are being carried out in Almaty. «There is an expert service in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. We plan to open a DNA laboratory there. But funds are needed. Negotiations are underway now. God willing, we will build it next year,» said Erkebek Ashirkhodzhaev.

Zhyldyz Sadyrbaeva noted that the country receives huge grants. «It seems to me that a DNA laboratory should be built this month. A rapist with good lawyers can get away with it,» the deputy stressed.

«I do not agree that we do nothing. I have been raising the issue of opening a DNA laboratory for two years. We talked about this with the head of the Cabinet. It’s not easy. We need space and equipment. Servicing costs 250 million soms a year. The cost of one DNA analysis exceeds $1,000,» the deputy minister said.

According to him, $2 million is needed to build a DNA laboratory.
