Situation in Ukraine: One third of Kyrgyz migrants to lose jobs in Russia

Since the beginning of military actions in Ukraine, the wages of migrant workers from Kyrgyzstan in Russia have decreased by 20 percent. Gulnara Derbisheva, director of Insan-Leilek Public Foundation, said at a roundtable in Bishkek.

According to her, since the beginning of the year, the hotline of the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan in Russia has received 3,440 appeals.

«First of all the issues of medical examination and fingerprinting were of high priority — 999 calls. There are 500 appeals with complaints about queues at state institutions in Russia,» the head of the Foundation said.

According to Gulnara Derbisheva, the tone of appeals has changed since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine.

«More than 290 citizens appealed because of the inability to send money to Kyrgyzstan due to sanctions. At least 350 people lost their jobs due to the withdrawal of foreign firms and companies from Russia. Some 100 people appealed on unemployment issues, 60 appeals came with reports of fraudsters offering Russian citizenship in exchange for participation in a special operation,» she noted.

According to the assessment of the head of the Foundation, about a third of migrants from Kyrgyzstan may lose their jobs in Russia in the near future.

The situation in Ukraine remains difficult. Fighting continues. Russia announced a special military operation on February 24, 2022. The number of military and civilian casualties continues to grow. Many states have imposed and continue to impose severe sanctions against Russia.
