OSCE / ODIHR: Elections were competitive, fundamental freedoms respected

Special Coordinator of the OSCE / ODIHR Observer Mission, Peter Juel-Jensen, commented on the parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan at a press conference today.

According to him, the campaign was competitive and the new legislation provides equal opportunities and changes the focus of power. Fundamental freedoms have been respected, and the will of the authorities to hold fair elections is visible.

OSCE representatives noted that the new electoral law nevertheless reduced, and significantly, the opportunities and rights of women and young people to be represented in the highest legislative body of the country.

In general, international observers noted that the elections were quite transparent, and the violations were insignificant.

Meanwhile, Peter Juel-Jensen added that the vote counting raised many questions. The elections can be described as peaceful, and they reaffirmed the striving for centralized power.

Elections of deputies of the seventh convocation of the Parliament have ended in Kyrgyzstan. The electoral system was changed in the country, so there will be 90 deputies instead of 120. As a result, 54 deputies of the Parliament are elected according to the proportional system (open lists of candidates of political parties) in the single electoral district, 36 deputies — according to the majority system in single-mandate constituencies.

According to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission, six parties get into the Parliament. Winners in single-seat constituencies were also announced.
