UN estimates approximate number of IS militants

The UN Security Council published a report by the Secretary-General on the threat to peace and security on the part of the Islamic State (IS). Among other things, the number of its militants in Iraq and Syria was presented. Lenta.ru reported.

According to the UN, from 12,000 to 20,000 militants are fighting in the ranks of terrorists; their number has significantly decreased over the past 16 months. The influx of foreign militants also slowed down. The Security Council suggests that the main threat to international security now is the return of militants to their countries and their movement from the conflict zone to other regions.

UN noted that IS funding is at a critical level. Terrorists continue to profit from the illegal sale of oil and from extortions. Experts believe that the self-proclaimed caliphate operates the amounts of several tens of millions of dollars every month. At the same time, in 2015, IS revenues were up to $ 500 million per month.

On June 8, IS issued a statement that threatened several countries. The message, written in bad English, encourages the people practicing Islam to stay away from places of mass gathering of people — markets, busy streets and squares, because «the soldiers of the caliphate will blow up, crush and cut throats to the enemies." The threatening letter is addressed to Muslims living in eight countries: Belgium, the United States, Russia, France, Britain, Canada, Australia and Italy.
