UK Director for Sanctions David Reed arrives in Kyrgyzstan

Director for Sanctions of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office David Reed is visiting Kyrgyzstan on April 26-28 to discuss implementation of sanctions imposed against Russia with local authorities and business associations. He will also discuss how the UK and Kyrgyzstan can work in partnership to tackle sanctions evasion. The British Embassy in Bishkek reported.

Within two days, the delegation will hold meetings at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the presidential administration.

David Reed will meet with local business associations, diplomatic missions and representatives of international organizations.

«More evidence is emerging that sanctions imposed after the start of the war in Ukraine are beginning to affect Russia’s military capabilities and limit Moscow’s ability to continue the war. However, [Vladimir] Putin is doing everything he can to circumvent our sanctions, which is fraught with the risk of prolonging the war. We believe that neither the UK nor Kyrgyzstan wants to see sanctioned British goods and technology imported by Russia through third countries. We are in Bishkek to discuss our analysis and share information on this issue,» said David Reed.

David Reed was appointed the Director for Sanctions at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 2022. He joined the diplomatic service in 2003 after a career in law. Before his appointment to the Sanctions Directorate, he worked in Ottawa as British Deputy High Commissioner to Canada, dealing with foreign policy, trade and climate issues. He also held diplomatic posts in Cyprus, France and Poland. In 2016, he became a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
