Foreign Affairs Minister of Belarus dies

Foreign Affairs Minister of Belarus Vladimir Makei has died. BBC reports, citing the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Belarus Anatoly Glaz.

The cause of death has not been reported.

On Friday, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry reported on its website about Makei’s meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Ante Jozic. On Monday, Makei was supposed to hold talks with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Makei was born in 1958 and has headed the Belarusian Foreign Ministry since August 2012. Prior to that, since 2008, he headed the administration of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. From 2000 to 2008 he was Lukashenko’s assistant.

Makei took an active part in Belarus’ negotiations with Western countries during the migration crisis in 2021, he also helped organize negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine on February 24.
