Elections: Working group to consider lowering of electoral threshold

It is planned to lower the electoral threshold in Kyrgyzstan. Participants of the interdepartmental group on improving the electoral legislation, created on the initiative of the Central Election Commission (CEC), said.

According to a lawyer Tattybubu Ergeshbaeva, there should be more parties in Parliament. She believes that single-member constituencies should be abolished.

The expert also does not rule out that radical groups may seep into the Parliament.

Ex-deputy of Parliament Mirlan Zheenchoroev agrees with her. He noted that 3 percent is the best option. In his opinion, if the threshold is set at 1 percent, the Parliament will turn into an open house.

«There is a high probability that parties of local rather than republican scale will get into the highest legislative body,» Mirlan Zheenchoroev said.

The corrected norms of the electoral legislation will start working by the next election cycle. It starts in 2025 with local elections. The election campaign for Parliament will pick up the baton in 2026, and the final chord will sound in 2027, when the country will have to elect a president.
