The UN Human Rights Council on Friday adopted a resolution on Ukraine, which provides for the formation of an independent commission to investigate human rights violations, RIA Novosti reports.
It is noted that 32 countries supported the resolution, 13 states abstained, Russia and Eritrea opposed.
The representative of the Russian Federation at the meeting of the UN Human Rights Council said that the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission has been working in Ukraine for several years, collecting and recording data on what is happening in the country. According to him, this makes the creation of a new investigation mechanism a waste of funds that could be directed to help ordinary citizens of Ukraine.
«However, all this hardly worries the authors of the resolution, who use any means to place all responsibility for what is happening in Ukraine on Russia,» the Russian representative said.
The draft resolution was submitted on Monday on behalf of Ukraine. In particular, it called for the immediate establishment of an independent commission to investigate «all alleged violations of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law in Crimea and certain areas of Donetsk and Lugansk regions starting from 2014, as well as in other areas of Ukraine starting from February 22, 2022».
Today is the 10th day of fighting in Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, the Russian President Vladimir Putin announced start of a special military operation. It was regarded in Ukraine and in the West as a full-scale invasion.
Second round of Russian-Ukrainian talks took place on March 3, 2022. The parties agreed on providing humanitarian aid to the population.
