UN urges Kyrgyz authorities to stop prosecution of Kamil Ruziev

Mary Lawlor, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, urged the Kyrgyz authorities to stop harassing the human rights activist Kamil Ruziev and start investigating violations of the laws he spoke about.

She stated that prosecution of Ruziev started after he voiced the facts of torture by law enforcement officers and shortcomings in their work.

Earlier, Kamil Ruziev stated that there was systematic pressure on him and his family members. He turned to the President Sadyr Japarov, recalling that the examination established that Kamil Ruziev did not forge documents, including a medical certificate. However, the case against him has not been terminated, and the proceedings are ongoing in the court of Karakol.

Employees of the State Committee for National Security detained the human rights activist on May 30, 2020 in Karakol. The court placed Kamil Ruziev under house arrest.

The public is outraged by the criminal prosecution of the human rights activist. Kamil Ruziev is known as a lawyer who helps victims of torture on the part of the police. He also informs about violations of the law by the security forces. Activists consider his prosecution as a revenge.
