Situation in Kazakhstan: EU offers its assistance to country

The European Union commented on the situation in Kazakhstan. Telegram channel Orda.kz reports.

According to it, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made a statement.

«We are concerned by the violence which has erupted, following peaceful protests, in Kazakhstan, which is an important partner for the European Union, with an Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement in force, and for the stability of the region.

We deeply regret the loss of life and strongly condemn the widespread acts of violence. It is important to prevent further escalations, to avoid any incitement to violence, to exercise restraint at all times, and to avoid exploitation of unrest for other purposes. We stand ready to provide assistance for a peaceful resolution of the crisis,» the statement reads.

He stressed that outside military support should respect the sovereignty and independence of Kazakhstan as well as the fundamental rights of all citizens.

«We urge Kazakhstan’s authorities to uphold their commitments at this challenging time, including respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of their citizens, particularly, the freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, and of the media,» the EU High Representative said in the statement.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2,2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed the increase in prices for liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other cities. The situation is slowly stabilizing; the anti-terrorist operation continues. Internet access has been restored.

President of the republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev introduced a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. At his request, the CSTO countries sent peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan. Scorpion special unit was sent to the republic from Kyrgyzstan.

At least 164 people were killed during the riots. About 125 criminal cases were initiated, 5,800 people were detained. 134 people were placed in temporary detention facilities. They are suspected of committing especially grave crimes. Another 516 citizens were subjected to administrative arrest. The rest are being checked.

The approximate amount of damage caused to business during the riots is estimated at 92.3 billion tenge.
