Should we expect strong earthquakes in 2018? Forecast of seismologists

«Judging by our forecasts and developments, we do not expect strong earthquakes in Kyrgyzstan in 2018,» Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov, Director of the Institute of Seismology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the situation will be the same as in 2017, that is, no earthquakes measuring more than 5-6 points are expected.

But you can not relax in any case. No one can guarantee that a much stronger earthquake will not occur. There is always such a possibility.

He cited Japan as an example, which feels tremors very often. «Exercises in schools and other institutions are held once a month there, and once a year, the Prime Minister conducts exercises for the entire country. Our head of the Cabinet has never conducted such exercises. Staff exercises are anly conducted. But readiness for earthquakes is determined not by reports of colonels, but by the readiness of the population and the quality of construction,» the head of the institute said.

«If we answer positively to these two questions, if every fifth-grader knows exactly what to do when a major earthquake occurs, then we can safely say about readiness. Unfortunately, I can not say that we are ready. Although we talk a lot about this. There are undoubtedly some improvements in this direction, but we have not exactly reached the level of Japan,» said Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov.
