Deputies of parliament against electoral threshold of 9 percent

The deputies of the parliament are against the electoral threshold of 9 percent in the parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan. They announced this at a meeting.

Ulugbek Ormonov asked why the threshold was increased to 9 percent. «At first, it was 5 percent, then it was increased to 7. We looked at the experience of other countries and came to the conclusion that some parties of Kyrgyzstan would not be able to overcome it. In many countries, the threshold is 3–5 percent," he said.

The initiators explained that the threshold was increased in order the parties to join efforts.

Iskhak Masaliyev is interested how the collateral amount of 1 million soms appeared. Mirlan Zheenchoroyev said that initially the offered pledge was 2 million soms, but then agreed with objections that it was too much.

Dastan Bekeshev added that  there are no specific requirements on this issue in the Constitution. «The candidate who goes to the polls spends much more than the pledge," he said.

President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev spoke about increasing the electoral threshold in the public park of the Memory of the Revolution on March 24, 2005. Then the figure was 9–10 percent.
