German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to visit Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will visit Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan from September 15 to September 17. The official spokesman for the German government Steffen Hebestreit announced.

He will take part in the second Central Asia — Germany meeting in C5+1 format. According to Steffen Hebestreit, the issue of expansion of cooperation with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan — key partners of Germany will be discussed during the talks.

«We strive to deepen cooperation with them, especially in the fields of science, economy, energy, communications and raw materials,» he said. The Chancellor will be accompanied by a large high-level business delegation.

The new Central Asia — Germany format intersect with another one — Central Asia — European Union, which was also developed by Germany. According to the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala, the EU has a strong presence in the region and intends to strengthen its work there. «Our goal is to promote the development and well-being of these countries and sustainability. In the next 30 years, we plan to continue working in Turkmenistan and in the Central Asian countries, partners, for the benefit of these countries and the EU,» Hakala said at the conference «Turkmenistan and the EU: 30 Years of Cooperation», which took place in May 2024 in Ashgabat.

Recall, the first summit was held in Berlin in September 2023, where the heads of the region’s countries supported the proposal to establish a strategic regional partnership with Germany.

Then, Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection Robert Habeck, noted at a meeting with President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov Germany’s interest in considering a new partnership in its trade policy, in particular with regard to Central Asian countries.

He emphasized that German companies study the conditions offered by a particular country before investing abroad. Robert Habeck added that his task was to conduct a corresponding conversation with potential German investors to attract them to the Kyrgyz market. He named three areas in Kyrgyzstan that could potentially be of interest to German entrepreneurs: raw materials, renewable energy sources and human resources.
