Kyrgyzstan can now export more than 8,000 goods to the UK at reduced or zero rates and on simplified terms under the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which came into effect on June 19, 2023. The British Embassy in Kyrgyzstan reported.
According to British statistics, the total volume of trade (goods and services) between Kyrgyzstan and the UK amounted to $54 million in 2022. With the entry into force of the new scheme, the Kyrgyz Republic has the opportunity to increase its exports, since almost the entire range of Kyrgyz exports is qualified for duty-free or preferential access to the UK.
«We want to further strengthen our ties, not only political, but also economic through the expansion of trade. With DCTS, the UK Government’s generous trade scheme, we have a great opportunity to further strengthen our economic ties and diversify Kyrgyzstan’s exports,» Chargé d’Affaires Ann Harrigan said.
In April 2023, the British Embassy organized a Kyrgyz trade mission as a first step towards unlocking the potential of DCTS for Kyrgyzstan. The program of the visit was focused on the agricultural and textile sectors, which are the most relevant for Kyrgyzstan. Participants learned about the benefits of the scheme and established contacts with potential UK partners and buyers.
Additional activities are planned to further promote and explain DCTS among the citizens of Kyrgyzstan and business associations.
