«Prior to this, the district court sentenced Aibek Upenov to a fine of 500,000 soms. The rector of the university was under house arrest. During the trial, he pleaded not guilty and said that he did not give instructions to his employees to collect money. According to Aibek Upenov, the teachers collected all the money voluntarily and it was kept in the trade union. The accused gave confessions during the investigation, allegedly in order to be released faster,» the sources reported.
Recall, Aibek Upenov was detained in August 2022. According to the investigation, a corruption scheme for misappropriation of budgetary funds was revealed at the university. The head of the university, in collusion with the responsible secretary of the admission committee, systematically took money from students and applicants during state and entrance exams.
