U.S. Treasury to discuss sanctions against Russia with Kyrgyzstan’s authorities

Senior officials of the U.S. Department of the Treasury will visit a number of European countries over the next two weeks, including Switzerland and Austria, as well as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, with the aim of countering sanctions evasion. RIA Novosti reports.

U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson will visit Zurich, Bern, Milan, Vienna and Berlin on April 16-22. Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes at the U.S. Department of the Treasury Elizabeth Rosenberg will visit Astana, Almaty and Bishkek on April 23-28.

«The U.S. Department of the Treasury offers a clear business solution: stay involved in the global economy or provide material support to the Russian war and lose access to the world’s most important markets,» the press release says.

It is noted that in Central Asia, Elizabeth Rosenberg, along with officials from the U.S. Department of Commerce, colleagues from the EU and the UK, will hold meetings with representatives of local government and business circles on the topic of compliance with sanctions and countering their circumvention in trade and related financial settlements.

After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed a number of sanctions against Russia, including the freezing of assets worth €21.5 billion belonging to individuals and organizations. EU leaders in October last year instructed the European Commission to prepare proposals for the use of frozen assets to finance the reconstruction of Ukraine.
