Kyrgyzstan asks China to renew pre-pandemic agreements

The Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan invites China to resume work on the implementation of the agreements reached in the pre-pandemic period. The Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Bakyt Torobaev said at a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the PRC to the Kyrgyz Republic Du Dewen.

According to him, implementation of previously signed agreements and memorandums between Kyrgyzstan and China, suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be resumed.

At least 24 memorandums and agreements were signed as part of Kyrgyzstan — China Business Forum in 2019.

In the field of foreign economic relations, the country considers the People’s Republic of China as one of its main partners. According to statistics, for 11 months of 2022, the trade turnover between the two states amounted to $3,678 billion, of which exports — $52 million, imports — $3,626 billion.

«We are grateful for the assistance in the implementation of the project for construction of Chui Canal 2, which will increase the water supply to our irrigated lands. It is proposed to resume construction work in the spring of 2023,» Bakyt Torobaev said.

In addition, a major transport project is the construction of China — Kyrgyzstan — Uzbekistan railway. In this direction, the parties must complete the necessary field studies and develop a feasibility study by June 2023.

Du Dewen noted China’s interest in increasing the supply of local agricultural products to the Chinese market, taking into account the demand for organic products in the country.

«In this regard, the Chinese side is ready to assist exporters in creating favorable conditions for increasing supplies,» she said.

According to the Cabinet of Ministers, more than $233 million of direct investment from China was attracted to the economy of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2021. This figure reached $219 million from January to September 2022.
