Deputy Elvira Surabaldieva said at a meeting of the Parliament that in accordance with the agreement on joint material, technical and medical support for the CSTO troops, the members of the organization undertake to provide their troops with the same type and compatible weapons.
«It is written in the background statement. Is it about acquiring only Russian weapons? Can’t we buy from Turkey or other countries?» she asked.
The First Deputy Minister of Defense Almazbek Karasartov replied that the requirement voiced by Surabaldieva applies to some units only.
«Most of the military equipment remained from the times of the Soviet Union and was donated to us by Russia. In this regard, the clause was included in the agreement. But not all of our armed forces are part of the CSTO troops. Only some units will be armed with Russian military equipment,» Almazbek Karasartov explained.
The Parliament approved agreements on joint material, technical and medical support for the troops of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, signed on September 16, 2021 in Dushanbe in three readings.
According to Almazbek Karasartov, the agreement defines the principles of joint medical, technical and legal support.
