Construction of a waste processing plant in Bishkek will begin in September. Mayor of the capital Emilbek Abdykadyrov said at a visiting meeting at the landfill. Press service of the City Hall reported.
The meeting was attended by deputies of Parliament and the Bishkek City Council.
At the meeting, they discussed the construction of a waste processing plant and the reclamation of the existing landfill. The mayor noted that the landfill issue needs to be addressed radically and in a holistic way.
Emilbek Abdykadyrov said that by the end of September the City Hall would start building the plant, which will be completed within 1.5-2 years.
«Earlier, the City Hall signed memorandums with several international companies that expressed their desire to resolve this issue. At the moment, the City Hall of the capital is studying the proposals received and is developing a feasibility study,» the press service added.
In 2013, the Government of Kyrgyzstan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed a loan agreement to finance the project «Improving the Solid Waste Management System in Bishkek». It involved the construction of a waste processing and sorting plant. As part of the project, the capital was allocated €22 million. Half of this money is a loan that the country will repay with interest.
Due to the delay in the implementation of the project for opening a new landfill and reclamation of the old one, Bishkek pays a fine for unused funds in the amount of 14 million soms.
The prosecutor’s office of the capital is investigating a criminal case on violations in the implementation of the project on the construction of Bishkek landfill. The former director of Bishkek Sanitary Landfill municipal enterprise was detained on suspicion of committing a crime under Article 337 «Abuse of official position» of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The case was also initiated against the former mayor Albek Ibraimov.
