Stanislav Shushkevich, the first head of independent Belarus and one of the authors of the Belovezh Accords, died at the age of 87. Euroradio reported, citing his wife Irina. She did not name the cause of death.
Shushkevich contracted the coronavirus in March. On April 26, he was admitted to intensive care due to the consequences of the illness.
In 1991-1994, Stanislav Shushkevich headed the Supreme Council of Belarus. As head of the republic, he signed the Belovezh Accords, which put an end to the existence of the USSR. In the first presidential elections, he took the fourth place after Alexander Lukashenko, winning about 10 percent of the votes. In 1995 he was again elected to the Supreme Council of Belarus.
He headed the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), he has been the honorary chairman of the party since 2018.
