The President of the Kyrgyz Republic delivered a video message at the ceremony of launch of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.
Sadyr Japarov thanked the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat for hosting the event of global importance.
According to him, this year is important, significant and special. The head of state is proud that in the year of celebration of the 30th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan’s membership in the UN the republic is a reliable supporter of the interests of mountain countries in the organization.
«We have accumulated a wealth of joint achievements with the UN. Today’s event dedicated to the announcement of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development is a good example. In the field of mountain cooperation, I remember the first Global Mountain Summit held 20 years ago. I am pleased to congratulate the fraternal states on the International Year and the 20th anniversary of the Mountain Partnership. I would like to take this opportunity to commend and express my gratitude for the Mountain Partnership’s honest work,» he said.
Sadyr Japarov confirmed that Kyrgyzstan supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He also noted that the republic faces many challenges on the way of sustainable development, especially in the mountainous regions.
The year 2022 has been declared in Kyrgyzstan as the Year of Mountain Ecosystems Protection and Climate Sustainability. In order to preserve the mountains, a national program «Green Heritage» was launched. It is planned to plant 6 million saplings annually throughout the country.
The President called on mountain partner countries to intensify the promotion of common interests on the global development agenda and to join the initiative to adopt a five-year plan for the development of mountain regions.
