Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Former and current European politicians have suggested nominating the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky for the Nobel Peace Prize. RBK reports, citing the website of the prize committee.

According to its data, in the appeal, the politicians said it was necessary to extend the deadline for nominating candidates for the prize until March 31, 2022 «in light of historically unprecedented events.»

«This is needed to ensure the nomination of the President Zelensky and the people of Ukraine for the Nobel Peace Prize,» the authors of the initiative said.

In this way, the politicians want to demonstrate to the people of Ukraine that the world is on their side. The appeal was signed by 36 politicians — the majority of them from the Netherlands, including former Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld and former Foreign Minister Ben Bot. Members of the European Parliament — former Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Vlad-Marius Botos from Romania, Karin Karlsbro from Sweden, Katrin Langensiepen from Germany and others — also supported the nomination of Volodymyr Zelensky.

Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, and a Philippine journalist Maria Ressa were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year. The committee named both as representatives of journalists standing for media freedom in the world.

Situation in Ukraine remains complicated. Fighting continues. Russia started a special military operation on February 24, 2022. The number of military and civilian casualties continues to grow. Many states have imposed and continue to impose severe sanctions on Russia.
