The international money transfer system Western Union has suspended its operations in Russia and Belarus. Company’s website says.
«In light of the ongoing tragic impact of Russia’s prolonged assault on Ukraine, we have arrived at the decision to suspend our operations in Russia and Belarus. We join the international community in expressing sincere hope for a diplomatic and peaceful resolution,» the statement says.
The company also said that for the past weeks its teams have been working to support Ukrainian customers, including the millions who have been forcibly displaced. This includes donations to support humanitarian relief efforts and fee-free money transfer services.
The situation in Ukraine remains complicated. Fighting continues. Russia started a special military operation on February 24, 2022. The number of military and civilian casualties continues to grow. Many states have imposed and continue to impose severe sanctions on Russia. On the fourth attempt, on the thirteenth day of the conflict, a humanitarian corridor was opened for refugees who decided to leave Ukraine. The first stage of evacuation of civilians from the city of Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine began on March 9.
