Year of Mountain Ecosystems Protection: Each Kyrgyzstani to plant 10 trees

The President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov issued a decree declaring 2022 the Year of Protection of Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Resilience. The Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision Dinara Kutmanova announced at a press conference.

She noted that the decree is aimed at mobilizing all forces to adapt the country to climate change.

«Not only state and local authorities, but also citizens. It is necessary to direct the entire society to awareness and action, to make a contribution to adaptation. One of them could be planting of saplings,» Dinara Kutmanova said.

She added that the department was tasked with developing a roadmap for the implementation of the decree by March 1. «One of the directions of the Green Kyrgyzstan program is tree planting. We plan that each citizen will plant 10 saplings by 2024. An analysis of the number of seedlings in the nursery-gardens, how the plantings will be distributed is carried out now. We must provide saplings, attract donor funds, help from compatriots abroad. There is such experience in other states,» the minister noted.

She stressed that another important aspect in reducing emissions is clean energy. «We have a large hydro potential, but we do not use it. Sadyr Japarov announced last year that Kyrgyzstan intends to build about 200 mini hydropower plants. This will also contribute to solving the problem of smog, because we will reduce coal consumption,» Dinara Kutmanova concluded.
