Ministry of Justice of Kyrgyzstan proposes to toughen penalties for smuggling

The Ministry of Justice of Kyrgyzstan initiated a bill to amend the criminal law to toughen penalties for smuggling. Press service of the ministry reported.

«It is proposed to supplement the Criminal Code with norms, which exclude the exemption of a person from criminal liability when paying double customs duties, in cases of economic smuggling, as well as committed by an organized (cross-border) group or as part of a criminal community. As well as confiscation of transport used for smuggling,» the statement says.

The amounts of fines will also be increased for other methods of illegal movement of goods and vehicles.

«If it is impossible to return perishable smuggled goods to the owner, it is proposed to evaluate and transfer them for sale,» the ministry said.

On January 25, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to take additional measures to step up the fight against smuggling.
