Amnesty International calls on Kazakh authorities to disclose data on casualties

Amnesty International called on the authorities of Kazakhstan to reveal data on civilian casualties during the unrest.

The statement specifies that citizens of the country talk about hundreds of killed. Dozens of people gather daily in front of Almaty’s central morgue to learn about missing relatives.

According to the Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office, a total of 4,578 victims were registered in Kazakhstan, of whom 4,353 were injured, including 3,393 members of the law enforcement agencies. During the state of emergency, 225 bodies were taken to morgues. At least 19 police officers and military personnel are among the killed.

It was also reported that during the days of mass riots offenders attacked the morgues in Almaty seven times and stole 41 bodies.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2, 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed the increase in prices for liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other regions. The situation is slowly stabilizing; the anti-terrorist operation continues. Internet access has been restored.

President of the republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev introduced a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. At his request, the CSTO countries sent peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan. Scorpion special unit was sent to the republic from Kyrgyzstan.

The CSTO mission in Kazakhstan has been successfully completed.
