The WHO committee called on countries to lift or relax restrictions on international travel. It is said in a statement published on the website of the organization.
It is noted that the restrictions contribute to the economic and social stress faced by the states. At the same time, these measures have not been beneficial, WHO said. Proof of this is that the Omicron strain is spreading despite the decision of some countries to impose travel restrictions.
The committee’s recommendations state that authorities can take measures to reduce the risk of spread of the coronavirus, which include testing tourists for COVID-19 or placing them under quarantine. The WHO added that these measures should be determined on the basis of a «thorough risk assessment» and should be applied with «respect for the dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of the traveler».
