The Guardian: Nazarbayev and Tokayev are in furious negotiations

Kazakhstan’s first president Nursultan Nazarbayev and the current head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev are in «furious negotiations» over the redistribution of assets, spoils and rents in the country. Article published by The Guardian says.

The journalists cite their own sources.

«The power struggle continues. There is no guarantee things will end smoothly,» one of the sources of the media outlet says.

The Guardian believes that Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has used crackdown to strip power from Nursultan Nazarbayev and his family.

According to one of the Guardian’s sources, Elbasy is in China, but his former adviser, Yermukhamet Yertysbayev, denied it. He said that the former president is still in Kazakhstan and is negotiating, but it is clear that the era of the first president is over.

Yermukhamet Yertysbayev also blamed «reactionary and conservative forces from Nazarbayev’s clan» for the mass protests.

Another source of The Guardian said that part of the political elite had already managed to declare their loyalty to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Earlier it was reported that the leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko had a telephone conversation with the ex-president of Kazakhstan on January 7. It was the first information about Nursultan Nazarbayev since the protests and riots broke out in the country. Kazakhstani people, among other things, demanded the resignation of Elbasy. Since January 2, the day the rallies began, the Kazakh leader of the nation has not made a single statement. His whereabouts and whereabouts of his family are still unknown.
