The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that more than a half of Europeans will be infected with the Omicron strain in the coming weeks. RIA Novosti reports citing the WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge.

According to him, 50 out of 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia have confirmed cases of Omicron infection. The Regional Director added that this variant of COVID-19 is rapidly becoming dominant in Western Europe and is now spreading to the Balkans.

«The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington predicts that more than 50 percent of the population in the (European) region will be infected with Omicron in the next 6-8 weeks,» he said.

It should be noted that the Health Minister of Kyrgyzstan Alymkadyr Beishenaliev said that Omicron has not been detected in Kyrgyzstan. Earlier, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan reported registered cases of this strain.
