Kazakh Interior Ministry: Foreign citizens among the detainees

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan said that there are foreigners among those detained in Almaty region. The situational center of the law enforcement department of Kazakhstan reported.

It is reported that over 4,200 people were detained in connection with the riots that took place in the country. The Ministry of Internal Affairs clarifies that there are citizens of a neighboring state among them. However, the country was not named.

«Some 4,266 people were taken to the police. Foreign citizens are among the detainees. More than 100 people were detained in one of the villages in Almaty region. According to preliminary data, these are citizens of a neighboring state,» the statement says.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began in the early days of 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed the increase in prices for liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other cities. The Internet is periodically turned off throughout the country, the media practically do not work.

The President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev introduced a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. At his request, the CSTO countries sent peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan.
