Situation in Kazakhstan: Zhanaozen residents wait for resignation of officials

Protesters in Zhanaozen, Kazakhstan, said they would continue the peaceful protests «until all government officials and members of Parliament, except for President Tokayev, resign.» Orda.kz reports.

«Tokayev is a literate person. Let him stay. The authorities need literate people, but the rest (government officials and parliament members) must leave. Until they leave, we will stay here,» one of the speakers said.

The number of participants in the protest reached about 1,000 people.

Mass protests in Kazakhstan began in early 2022. Residents of Zhanaozen and Aktau in Mangistau region opposed the increase in prices for liquefied gas, then the protests spread to other cities. Clashes with security officials continue in Almaty. The Internet is periodically turned off throughout the country, the media practically do not work.

The President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev introduced a state of emergency in the republic, dismissed the government and became the head of the Security Council. At his request, the CSTO countries sent peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan.
