Protests in Kazakhstan: Eight Interior Ministry employees, servicemen killed

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan reports that eight police officers and soldiers of the National Guard were killed during the riots in different cities of the country. Another 317 were injured. Tengrinews reports with reference to the ministry.

The ministry said that «acts of vandalism and looting were organized by provocateurs and hundreds of people were injured at the hands of the outrageous crowd.»

The Ministry of Internal Affairs calls on Kazakhstanis not to succumb to provocations.

The protests are taking place in cities of Kazakhstan for several days due to an increase in the cost of liquefied gas — its price was increased from 60 to 120 tenge per liter since January 1. Protests, which escalated into clashes with the police and riots, took place in several cities of the republic, including Nur-Sultan and Almaty.

The state of emergency has been introduced throughout Kazakhstan. The government of Kazakhstan has resigned. The Chairman of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan was also replaced, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev became the new chairman instead of Nursultan Nazarbayev.
