The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially announced that a new strain of coronavirus Omicron is spreading faster than other its variants. Reuters reports.
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Omicron infects vaccinated people.
«There is strong evidence that Omicron spreads much faster than Delta, and there is a possibility that people who are vaccinated or who have recovered from COVID-19 may get reinfected,» he said.
Speaking at the briefing, the WHO chief urged people to cancel some of their plans for the upcoming holidays.
«All of us are tired of this pandemic. We all want to spend time with friends and family. We all want to get back to our normal lives. The quickest way for all of us, leaders and individuals, to do that is to make hard decisions to protect ourselves and others. In some cases, this means canceling or postponing events. It is better to cancel now and celebrate later than to celebrate now and grieve later. A cancelled event is better than a cancelled life,» he stressed.
It is possible to end the pandemic in 2022 by ensuring vaccination of 70 percent of the population in every country of the world by the middle of next year.
