COVID-19: Risk of re-infection is higher in people over 65

People aged 65 and over are the least protected from re-infection with COVID-19. Study conducted by Danish scientists, published in The Lancet scientific journal says.

According to experts, the increased risk of repeated contracting coronavirus in people over 65 is associated with natural aging of the immune system. According to them, protection of the general population against re-infection with COVID-19 reaches 80 percent and higher in those under 65, while for people above 65 it is about 47 percent. This means that representatives of such a group are more prone to re-infection.

Scientists determined the risk of re-infection by analyzing the results of repeated PCR tests for a new type of coronavirus of residents of Denmark from the beginning of September to the end of December 2020.

Experts recommend not to rely on natural immunity and get vaccinated to provide longer and more reliable protection against re-infection.
