A ban on polygamy was included in the Family Code of Turkmenistan. It will enter into force on September 1. Rambler.ru reported.
The amendment to the current law specifies that polygamy means «cohabitation with two or more women at the same time with joint housekeeping.»
Despite the fact that the majority of the population in Turkmenistan professes Islam, which allows men to have up to four wives, the country has always had criminal punishment for polygamy. So, an offender can be sentenced to a large fine or correctional labor up to two years.
