Cooling liquid and antifreeze to become more qualitative in EEU

The countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (ЕEU) will set special rules for cooling liquids for cars – cooling liquid and antifreeze. By 2019, these products will be more qualitative. This decision was made at a meeting of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).

It is noted that the EEC Council adopted the technical regulation of the EEU on the safety of chemical products. The document establishes unified mandatory requirements for chemical products produced in the union, as well as rules and forms for assessing its compliance, identification rules, requirements for terminology, labeling and rules for its application.

The technical regulations provide for the formation and maintenance of a register of chemicals and mixtures used in the territory of the Union. Their inclusion in the register is a fundamental factor for obtaining a notification of state registration.

The members of the EEC Council limited the use of methyl alcohol in cooling liquids for motor vehicles: its mass fraction shouldn’t exceed 0.05 percent. This norm will come into force on January 1, 2019.

As the Minister for Technical Regulation of the EEC Valery Koreshkov noted, the safety of lubricants, oils and special fluids regulates the relevant technical regulations of the Union. But recently the cases of sale of low quality antifreezes containing up to 40 percent of methyl alcohol become frequent in the EEU market.

“This greatly exceeds the permissible standards and jeopardizes people's lives. Taking into account the situation in the auto chemical market, the EEC prepared a change in the technical regulations. It also provides for limiting the use of methanol. Previously, there was no requirement for methanol maintenance in the regulations, which is classified as poison,” the Minister for Technical Regulation of the EEC Valery Koreshkov noted.
