Kyrgyzstan develops national plan for adaptation to climate change

Kyrgyzstan is preparing a national plan for adaptation to climate change. The Minister of Natural Resources Meder Mashiev announced at a conference in Bishkek.

According to him, this plan includes sectoral measures aimed at protecting the economy, agriculture and water resources from the effects of climate change. Mashiev noted that this is a responsible step to protect both current and future generations.

«Our glaciers are melting, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. We must prepare the population and key sectors for these challenges,» Meder Mashiev emphasized, adding that Kyrgyzstan’s mountain ecosystem also plays a vital role in the region.

The minister also told about Zhashyl Muras initiative, launched under the leadership of President Sadyr Japarov. The program involves planting millions of trees per year, which should help restore forests, improve air quality and combat land degradation.

The minister noted the importance of international cooperation and support from partners, which enabled Kyrgyzstan to implement projects on protection of biodiversity and expand protected areas. According to him, these efforts will help create a more sustainable future for the country and the world.

In March 2022, President Sadyr Japarov launched the national campaign Zhashyl Muras (Green Heritage) throughout Kyrgyzstan as part of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development and the Year of Mountain Ecosystem Protection and Climate Resilience.
