Schoolgirl from Bishkek plants flag of Kyrgyzstan at North Pole

A schoolgirl from Kyrgyzstan, Zlata Shvacheva, took part in the 5th international expedition «Icebreaker of Knowledge» and planted the country’s flag at the North Pole. Her parents and organizers told 24.kg news agency.

They told that the expedition took place from August 13 to August 22, 2024. At least 63 schoolchildren, including nine from countries where Rosatom is developing nuclear technologies — Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Hungary, India, China, and South Africa — participated in it. Along with the schoolchildren, 25 delegates selected as part of the youth festival in 2024 took part in the event.

The expedition reached the North Pole on August 17, 2024. On this day in 1977 the icebreaker Arktika became the first vessel in the world to reach the top of the Earth in a surface voyage.

Zlata Shvacheva told that participation in the expedition was a unique opportunity for her not only to see the North Pole, but also to plant a new flag of Kyrgyzstan there.

«This is a great honor for me, because the previous flag was planted by cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov. We also installed signs indicating our hometown and the distance to it from the North Pole and wishes,» she told, adding that as part of the expedition, she was able to tell the participants about her native country.

The project was implemented with the support of Rosatom state corporation.
