Arrest of former employee of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan Zhoomart Karabaev has been extended. Human rights activist Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova reported on social media.
She recalled that Zhoomart Karabaev refused to give a positive expert opinion at the request of a special services employee.
«He was subsequently fired from the National Academy of Sciences, and a little later arrested on charges of calls for mass riots. It is ironic that Zhoomart was arrested under the same article of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic under which he refused to give an expert opinion. The opinion on his case was given by the academy’s employee against whom Zhoomart complained,» Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova posted.
The human rights activist also demanded an investigation into the statement about pressure and the issuance of ordered expert opinions by the National Academy of Sciences in criminal cases against activists and akyns.
Zhoomart Karabaev will be held in pretrial detention until September 19.
The former research fellow at the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic previously testified in the case against publicist Olzhobay Shakir, who was sentenced to five years in prison in May 2024 for preparations for mass riots.
