Eight citizens of Kazakhstan became defendants in a criminal case in Greece. Prosecutors accused them of setting fire to a forest on the island of Hydra in the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea, eKathimerini media outlet reports.
According to the media, the country’s main supervisory authority believes that passengers from Kazakhstan traveled on a private yacht and launched fireworks from its board.
«The charges were prompted by new evidence discovered during a forensic examination ordered by the prosecutor at the fire scene. Firefighters found remnants of fireworks in the bay where the fire broke out,» the statement says.
Authorities have already detained the yacht’s captain and his first mate, while other arrested crew members have been released on bail with restrictions.
EKathimerini clarifies: the Kazakhs left the country and now the Greek authorities have turned to Astana for help in detaining them.
Earlier it was reported that the authorities of Greece are already evacuating tourists due to severe fires in the country. The fire is raging in the Attica region and on the Peloponnese peninsula.
