At least 188 United Nations employees died in the line of duty last year. Most of them — 135 people — worked for the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees in Gaza. The organization’s website reports.
According to it, UN workers who died in 2023 were representatives of 37 countries and 18 different divisions of the organization. Among them were both civilian personnel and military and police personnel.
The memory of employees who died last year was honored the day before at the UN headquarters. The organization’s Secretary-General Antonio Guterres promised to provide support to their families.
