Transport Ministry proposes to revise route network in Bishkek

Public transport runs on 134 routes in the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Ilyaz Albanov, chief specialist of the Department of Transport, said at the round table «Sustainable Development of Bishkek: Main Trends in Transport Development.»

According to him, to date the route network of the city consists of 134 routes, of which trolleybus — 11, bus — 36 and minibus — 87. Every day 770 buses, 152 trolleybuses and 2,888 minibuses run along the routes. They are served by 29 operators of private firms, as well as by the municipal fleet and one trolleybus fleet.

«The analysis of the city network shows that the route network is designed taking into account the profitability of these routes. We consider it advisable to revise it according to the General Plan, taking into account the number of passengers, residents. Today the routes are built in such a way that the majority of transport travels along several major streets: Chui and Manas avenues, Kievskaya, Abdrakhmanov and other streets. And there are streets where buses do not go,» Ilyaz Albanov said.

He noted that there are several proposals to reduce the number of traffic jams in the city. In particular, to revise the schedule of work of state institutions, educational facilities. «Traffic jams disappear on the streets on Saturdays, Sundays, during vacations. It is possible, for example, to start work of some institutions at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. if possible. Also change the schedule of classes in schools, universities,» Ilyaz Albanov said.

It is also advisable to create parking lots with the introduction of hourly payment, logistical points for transport from the regions, where residents will be able to leave their cars and then travel by public transport.
