Over 8,500 statements on domestic violence registered in Kyrgyzstan

At least 8,502 statements about domestic violence were registered in Kyrgyzstan for eight months of 2023. The Deputy Interior Minister of Kyrgyzstan Oktyabr Urmambetov said at a meeting of the Parliament.

He noted that there is an increase in registered facts of family violence compared to 2022. He associated this with the work of internal affairs officers and the installation of surveillance cameras in public places.

MP Sharapatkan Mazhitova said that the real number of violence cases was three times higher than the figure voiced by the deputy minister and suggested increasing the number of women working in the police.

«In the last case, for example, male policemen said the woman that they would come when her husband killed her. Only a woman can understand a woman’s pain. Because of the irresponsibility of your officers, the impunity of criminals, violence in families and the number of deaths of victims is growing. This is the fault of the police,» Sharapatkan Mazhitova said.

The deputy minister admitted the fault of the police and noted that measures are being taken against employees who are negligent in their work.
