Mobile game from Kyrgyzstan reaches final of international competition

Mobile game for teenagers «The Secret of Sary-Kul» (Sary-Koldun Syry) from Kyrgyzstan reached the final of the international competition Games for Change Award in «Best Game for Civil Society» category. UNICEF Office in the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

The game is devoted to the problem of child marriages in Kyrgyzstan. It was developed by Open Line Public Foundation with the support of UNICEF as part of Ray of Light global initiative, funded by the European Union.

The purpose of the competition is to recognize the best solutions for social impact and change. The winner will be announced at the annual Games for Change Festival on July 18-19 in New York (USA).

«The Secret of Sary-Kul» is a gaming mobile application designed to inform the audience about the dangers of child marriage, importance of education, unlocking the potential and development of leadership skills in girls. It is made in the genre of interactive history, where all events unfold in a mountain village near Bishkek. The player can make decisions for the main character, influencing and changing development of the scenario.

More than 40,000 players have downloaded the mobile game to play and learn about child marriage. The study showed that the game «The Secret of Sary-Kul» significantly reinforced the belief that child marriage is a crime, increased the willingness of players to help friends facing forced marriage, and made girls much more confident that they could convince their parents to refuse marriage through dialogue.
