London notes surges in re-exports of military goods from Kyrgyzstan

Director for Sanctions of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office David Reed told reporters on Thursday that that the United Kingdom takes cultural, humanitarian, economic ties between Kyrgyzstan and Russia with understanding and does not call on the country to isolate itself from the Russian Federation.

According to him, the only wish is to work together with the UK and other G7 countries to reduce the amount of goods that Russia can use in the buildup of weapons that will be directed against Ukraine.

He stressed that the UK is not asking Kyrgyzstan to apply sanctions against Russia, but world leaders, in particular London, are concerned about surges in the volume of goods exported from the United Kingdom to the Kyrgyz Republic.

«We had to understand what was happening and how the government was tracking the movement of these goods, what can we do together to prevent attempts to circumvent sanctions,» David Reed said.

He added that Central Asia and Kyrgyzstan in particular should not become a hub for the re-export of military goods to Russia.

David Reed believes that the assistance of the countries of the region to the Russian Federation may have a negative impact on their image and investment attractiveness.

The UK Director for Sanctions concluded that an understanding was reached with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic on key issues.
