EU and Japan oppose U.S. idea to ban exports to Russia

The European Union and Japan opposed the U.S. proposal to the G7 countries to ban all exports of goods to Russia. The Financial Times reported.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the G7 countries were discussing the imposition of an embargo on exports to the Russian Federation. This would completely change the current sanctions regime. If now export of everything that is not prohibited by sanctions is allowed, then with a new approach, export of all goods would be banned, except for those for which an exception is made.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that Brussels was not yet ready to agree on a new, 11th package of restrictions against Russia. It is assumed that they will be aimed at combating attempts to circumvent existing sanctions.

To enter into force in the EU, the new criteria must be approved by all member states of the Union.
